Personally I used to skip sorc phase and go straight to hdonk phase, get rushed by friends do a couple of runs get a few items and spirit swrd + shield trade for nigma asap. Funny how hrs are available almost instantly ladder starts

are you playing with a set grp of friends early on in the ladder? if you play with rnds in pub games go with hammerdingo, if you play with set grp ask them if they wanna have nec or assa.
nec does decently in cs runs/cows but tbh you will want to invest in expensive runewords at some point. anything gets tiring without tele imo
