There are a few strange tricks I've learned to fix this without refreshing. Maybe one of them will work for you too

1. Open your inventory and click on an item on the right side (left couple spots don't work for some reason), then swipe up and down.

2. Switch screen from portrait to landscape and back, then swipe up and down.

3. Repeatedly swipe the screen up and down as a last resort. Sometimes I have to change to another tab and back before it will work, but I've never failed to save my game after trying all 3 of these

I switched back to phone couple of times & did work great again, than quickly started to do shits.
