I think it is quite clear to the world that these two guys are a kind of unique talent that only flashes every so often. That they are both in the league at the same time is pretty great for the sport.

As they both mature and embark on what are hopefully lengthy careers I have to ask the question: Who is more valuable?

And it is an honest one; despite me being a KC fan and a huge fan of Mahomes and his unique play style and ability it is a serious question. Is he more valuable than Lamar Jackson?

Jacksons movement is better than most of the running backs and returners in the league. He also has developed a tremendous amount of poise in what is still a very young career. He is such a threat on the ground it is like having an extra player on the field. Just by taking the snap he spreads a defence thin. His explosiveness and athletic ability are nothing short of incredible. He led the league in passing Touchdowns and was 6th in the league for total rushing yards. That's an absolutely broken set of statistics.

Mahomes on the other hand doesn't offer the same brand of spectacle. He is a capable runner and shows good vision seeing the opportunities where he can pick up easy yards and capitalize on the mistakes of the defense... But it's obviously no comparison to Lamar Jacksons god like speed and agility.

I see Mahomes' talent encapsulated in two key factors. The first I touched on briefly is his vision. For such a young player he seems to be able to understand the vulnerabilities of the defense. He makes the smart plays like a veteran QB. Part of this vision is also his leadership. And it is perhaps the most overlooked aspect... Having watched him pretty closely over the last couple years I've seen him energize and rally his team to victory numerous times. Most memorable to all of us is the last Superbowl. He has that Tom Brady X factor. Secondly his incredible arm strength and unique throwing mechanics. He executes throws that would be impossible for anybody else to do. Just as Lamar Jackson can suddenly shift from a genuine passing threat to one of the most effective rushers in the league Mahomes can extend a play and avoid pressure and make impossible completions. His ability to generate yardage out of plays that should by all rights be sacks, incompletes, or dead plays, makes him just as deadly as Lamar Jackson in his own right. As Lamar Jackson is an extra player on the field, Mahomes is like a 5th down occasionally gifted to each drive.

I put it forward honestly. From a franchise perspective, who would you rather have under center?

Jackson is more than just a QB though. He had the 6th most rushing yards in the NFL the same season he led the NFL in passing touchdowns.
