New rate is $550 per week, $1100 per fortnight.
Anyone on a minimum wage job working under 30 hours a fortnight is better off getting fired.
Pretty angry about this to be honest.
Would rather a ubi than to just hand taxpayer money over to just the currently unemployed.

This is a "temporary" response to the corona unemployment issues but it applies to all jobless regardless of how long they have been on benefits.

Things are looking great while central banks are printing money and governments issue all kinds of relief / bailout packages...

Maybe it's temporary measure because they can't "sort out" everyone immediately ?
Including those who lost a job in the past months, were in great difficulty, and are not stuck for even longer (this is just an idea...)

rome wasn't built overnight.

be happy that a large percent of people who were asking the question, once the idea of UBI went mainstream, "how would i do at home if i had enough money to stay there" are getting an answer of sorts.

it is not until an issue is on the doorstep of people that they'll change their minds. Corona is honestly doing a good thing in that aspect, even though its doing so much harm.

Its exposing our health care system as an embarrassment. Vietnam has reacted better than us in detection and treatment. They are a country we lost to communism lol.

a mixture of our healthcare system and also the lack of goods we create here. or more accurately can create here in an emergency. we've spent too many decades outsourcing everything to china without building a stockpile in case we needed to cut off contact. many of the items we're short on dont even have best by dates. we should have been stockpiling sanitizer, masks, etc ever since H1N1 hit.

one of the biggest issues i see is no coherent organizational network between care providers. if we ever move to universal healthcare that will be needed, so we should start there. something to help facilitate inventories, labs with hospitals, and facilitate restocking in times of shortages. we can do this without socializing all of medicine, and if we ever hope to have a socialized system it will be needed anyways. should be a bipartisan ask, but im sure it will get politicized none the less.

Honestly, I think a lot of it has to do with American Exceptionalism. America has done some INCREDIBLE things and the people have done some amazing things through grit. However, that leads to unimpressive people thinking that they are great BECAUSE they are American. The reality is that America is great because amazing people make it that way.

This post WW2 attitude is pretty toxic given that all the people who won it are fucking dead now haha. There's no reason why we can't take ideas that come from other countries and improve them. That's LITERALLY what the Founding Fathers (who we deify) did! Having the drive to be better is what makes America great and I don't think we have that anymore. We're being carried by the few and I don't think that's sustainable.

House Dems' bill would have $600/week in unemployment.
