Sanders' lead over Trump in the decisive battlegrounds is very slim:

As much as I would love Bernie, I think a lot of hype has died down for him since 2016. In 2016 there's virtually no doubt that Bernie would have smashed Trump, but now that he's been in a field of multiple good candidates.... it's harder to say.
I agree that his hype has died down, but he still has a decent-sized core of very loyal supporters, guys who are "Bernie or bust".
I strongly disagree with your claim that Bernie would have smashed Trump in 2016. There's lots of very damaging opposition research against Sanders, and his policies and ideas are far to the left of the country on most issues. Back in 2016, he was struggling a ton with minorities. And it's a realistic possibility that the mainstream media would have rallied behind Trump; or at least have written down both candidates instead of the concerted effort to write Hillary into the White House that we saw. Also, see the head to head polls I linked above, which dont show Sanders with a commanding lead over Trump at all.
I also strongly disagree with the notion that the current Democratic field is filled with multiple good candidates. Joe Biden failed miserably in both of his previous presidential runs. This time around, he's the front-runner. Also, if the field was so strong, party elites and donors wouldnt have publicly contemplated fielding someone else, less than a year from election night.
