Sure, I was being serious. UBI, as far as I understood it so far, works on the idea that people no longer have to work to survive, which would unleash a lot of creativity, allow for more private family and care work, and cause wages to better reflect the usefulness for society and the comfort level.
If UBI doesnt cover living expenses, then it also doesnt help that much against those affected by automation.
As long as UBI doesnt cover living expenses, it's not much more than a glorified extension of food stamp programs: a standstill premium intended to prevent riots and crime from getting out of control in areas with low job opportunity.
that is the end goal of UBI. in the mean time it is used to get a head start by increasing savings of families, decreasing debt of families, and bolstering retirement accounts. if we charged corporations the taxes needed to financially support 50% of the population, as will be needed by the year 2080 or so imo, the world economy would collapse.
as of now it can help someone who lost a fulltime job survive off of savings, UBI, and part time work. or it can fully support some people in very cheap living expenses. my ex-stepmother lives entirely off social security, zero savings, and she's a renter.
