go on the bay of e and search for addressable led strips/controllers

I checked these out. Is there some website or tutorial any1 would suggest to using these with something like arduino? Looks like I may need a few different parts to make this work

Power supply, arduino, soldering a few things, programming the board etc. Its not too difficult and there is plenty of guides.

so just the arduino board, power supply (probably need a few for longer run?), not too sure what to solder and what is a good beginner soldering kit for this type of project, and what to solder.

I think there's a lot of stuff I can just copy and paste basically for programming these

thanks I'll check them out. quick glance seem like good guides.

I know it looks scary. But it's actually fun. It's pretty simple if you just go into it thinking about the fun part.
More or less, it's modern tinker toys. Just get a few components, and use some wires to solder them together. THEN, you'll get familiar with it, and start thinking of new ways to use the parts.

Everything is fairly cheap, so even boo-boos aren't a deal breaker. Unlike building computers, this stuff is more like arts and crafts. With comps you don't have much leeway...maybe some different lights or cooling.

With this arduino stuff, once you get the code down, you can pretty much make w/e you like. Like I said...once you get the hang of it, you'll be in the shower one day and get another new idea for this stuff.
Pretty soon we'll be reading YOUR guides on the internet.

/e If you decide to get into this....get yourself a mid range soldering station like this... Weller WLC100CUL

Keep the sponge wet and the tip(s) clean. Just wipe on the sponge.

Tips...

/e The trick to making a good solder joint is to apply the tip of the iron to the wire, and the solder pad at the same time... THEN when they are hot, apply the solder. In other words you want the tip to touch the wire, the solder pad and the solder at the same time, applying the solder last.
