the game has been balanced around LOD and the availablilty of runewords. therefor in classic most builds fell off into unplayable grounds. i tried. for years. ended up using most for nightmare "mid level dueling" back when we had a community
Javazon is kind of a popular build.
Popular builds in classic are:
Sorc: frozen orb, blizzard, fireball, enchant (enchant only for loading 2 or more chars). As I wrote above lightning is a meme build mostly for PvP (where it is also bad)
Pala: hammerdin and (to some degree) PvP FOH
Barb: whirlwind
Necro: (mostly for PvP) bone necro, (to some degree) PvM summoner - but summoner just feels bad in classic Diablo
Amazon: javazon (weak for PvM imho, meh in PvP), bow amazon guided arrow (mostly for PvP)
I think in the top I didnt list Strafe or Multishon amazons; probably you can beat the game using them, but that will require tons of patience and a very good bow
