Four possible scenarios:
  • They got the guy and he's an American neo-Nazi at face value. That means that they doxxed him and put out his name, and he already lives in Russia and will face no social or legal consequences. It changes nothing.
  • The guy was actually a fed. In which case they just fucked up a huge undercover honeypot operation to lure extremists into the open. They jeopardized our security and put us at risk of more attacks, as would-be terrorists get more wary. There's good evidence of this scenario, as the FBI clearly had informants inside 'The Base' as they said during the arrests of the members last week. And they already suspected it. It would also endanger this guy. Outing an undercover is extremely dangerous. And on top of all that, if he's a fed and he's in Russia, he's extremely vulnerable to FSB counterintelligence. And it sure sounds from the reporting like they didn't even bother to ask the FBI/CIA to confirm whether he was undercover, which would have given opportunity to exfiltrate him if that was the case.
  • The guy was actually a Russian agent. Which would mean that while exposing an extremely hostile Russian operation to meddle in domestic US affairs, it also ruins any chance for US counterintelligence to exploit this information and turn him or work their way up the Russian food chain. Thereby again jeopardizing US national security. Its also incredibly unlikely, because Putin is not stupid enough to run such an incredibly high risk low reward operation as directly supporting mundane terrorism in the US. That doesn't serve any of his purposes but would risk gigantic geopolitical fallout. So no, that's not realistic.
  • They just named the wrong guy. If this was some random dipshit who just got fingered by The Guardian as a neo-nazi terrorist group leader, than the ensuing defamation lawsuit will be of biblical proportions and will bankrupt their shitty paper, something long overdue. They don't sound very certain they got the right guy and their evidence is a string of connected identifications that introduces numerous opportunities to be mistaken. The more links you have to traverse, the more chances you fucked up.
