the american people were able to elect Trump president against the overwhelming consensus of elites. the US has a barely functional political system, but it is still able to facilitate change, and jointly, the american voters are still able to influence the politics and the direction of the country.

for example, if large swaths of the white working class tomorrow decided to jump ship from republicans and onto the Warren bandwagon because they like her wealth tax, no amount of media manipulation and no amount of money for political ads would be able to stop her from becoming president. the only way the plutocrats could stop her and her wealth tax would be a hit job.

the Chinese people doesnt have this degree of influence on its own future. the only way they could fundamentally alter the course of their country would be a revolt, resulting in a bloody civil war - and even then, they would still need to actually win this war against the stacked police state.
