Im kind of thinking they went that way because of sophie turner's popularity from GOT and wanted to capitalize on people coming to watch her.
That's exactly what it was and it's why they pivoted Apocalypse to focusing even more on Jennifer Lawrence, it just doesn't fucking work lol. You had a good formula, a revamped more violent X-Men, tying in real world events and making it darkish, but not pushing it to a cheesy point. It's upsetting because the X-Men was always my favorite as a kid and the only appearance of my absolute favorite X-Men, Gambit, was a fucking travesty.
