>'Progressives' 2016-2020: Trump is reducing our influence and leadership abroad by bringing troops home, how fucking dare he! We need to intervene in Syria, we need to have large standing armies in Germany, Afghanistan and everywhere in between! The Russians are coming!!!

Just like with conservatives, there's varying views on foreign policy among progressives. I actually read and listen to progressives, and many agree with Trump's instinct to lessen America's footprint militarily around the world. They'd also take issue with Trump gutting the State Department, insulting our allies, praising our enemies, supplying the Saudi's bombs for the Yemen war, taking a hostile stance against Iran, etc.
Clear difference in my eyes between keeping forces in countries like Germany and South Korea, versus starting a war in Iraq or intervening in Libya.
Also, Mattis and McCain don't like Trump's foreign policy instincts, sure. But you're just using that as an excuse to not grapple with their legitimate criticisms of Trump on other issues. It's a constant refrain among Trumpists... to boil down good-faith criticisms by people into bad-faith ones based on policy disagreements.
