I did have a suspicion. GTX 580 were very HOT cards. I had one myself. Still do, though I'm not using it.
I used the old version of EVGA Precision to run the fan at 60-65% all the time. Version 2.1.1, but it's not compatible with Windows 10 I'm afraid.

/e If you are on Windows 10, you might want to try the newer versions of EVGA Precision, or MSI Afterburner (pretty much the same program), and try either a fan curve or a fixed fan speed.

im on windows 7 still i prefer it over windows 10 even thou 10 i hear has better performance when it comes to games etc

Because the graphics card die is much bigger than a normal cpu is it possible i put to little thermal paste on it? i put about a pea size dolip on it. I diden't want to go crazzy with it because i was afraid it would go everyware

but yah i pretty much abused this card for years by not cleaning it. Will the temps never go back to normal? or is it possible i have to change the thermal pads on the other chips etc lmk thanks

I would just get EVGA Precision 2.1.2 and use that. You will NEVER get a GTX 580 to run cool w/o fan speed software. This will work on Windows 7...

It allows you to set the fan speed on the video card. Like I said above... on my GTX 580 I had to run the fan at 60-65% and card was cool.
You set the fan speed percent you want, then click the indicator that says apply overclocking settings at startup. (It's not overclocking when you just set the fan speed, but that's what the button says).

You can also set a fan curve.

/e Here's mine...

1. UNclick Auto
2. Set the fan speed slider to say 65%
3. Click Apply
4. Click Apply at Windows Startup

That's it.

Do you know if this will shorten the life span of the gfx card? i mean i already had it for 8+ years so it wouldent suprised me if it died any day to be honest also im looking at my desktop gadget thingie its telling me the fan % is sitting at 40 when idle

Yeah, the fans on those cards defaulted to keeping the card at 40% at idle. Like I said, you can also set a "fan curve" where the fan goes to a certain speed % depending on the temps. Personally, I just leave it at a fixed percent.
Hasn't hurt any of my cards. I'm at 6 years on this GTX 780 Ti. Comp runs 24/7.

/ee This is live... right now...

When EVGA Precision is minimized... it's ON... when you close the program it's OFF.

/eee Those 4 things in circles ( in the pic above)are the ONLY settings I've changed.

You can also use MSI Afterburner. The modern version. It does a lot more things, but it also does the GPU fan speed.

https://www.msi.com/page/afterburner

/e Both EVGA Precision and MSI Afterburner are based on the really old program Riva Tuner. In other words... they're really the same program.

If you want... here's the modern EVGA Precision.. https://www.evga.com/precisionx1/

ALL these programs do the same things. The allow you to overclock a GPU and adjust the fan speed. I just use the old EVGA Precision cause it's a whole lot easier.

/eee But like I said far above... GTX 580's run really hot, they always have.

Here, scroll to the bottom and read the idle and load temps for the GTX 580...

Here's my vid cards....the 780 Ti (not shown) is in the computer...

Here is my comp...with the Titan in it...
