Fucking finally finished the series and was able to watch this. It was much more predictable than I had anticipated, and much more than the series had been. Although it was painfully straightforward, I think they did an excellent job of closing out this epic show. They managed to advance/age the characters (and Deadwood itself) over the past 10 years as realistically as possible, with the one exception being Doc, who clearly had TB at the end of S3. The writing/acting was as good as ever, with of course Olyphant (Bullock), McRaney (Hearst) and McShane (Al) being the main standouts. Jane still annoys me, I don't hate her as I did early in the series, but she just fucking irks me and her drunken rambling and petty fucking behavior has always rubbed me the wrong way. I wasn't a fan of Manning being an agent of Hearst's, almost anyone in the camp would have been a more feasible double-agent than him. He never once displayed a lack of moral integrity during the show's run and while people do change, him being corrupt enough to allow an innocent man's death is a stretch, but being corrupt enough to shoot someone he admired in the fucking back, is well beyond implausible, especially without being given specific instruction to do so. That scene made no sense and it was a forced "Look, Jane's a hero" moment, that maybe only irked me as much as it did because of my previously mentioned dislike for Calamity Jane.
Also, side note, did they just fuck up SUPPPPPER bad in the first episode of Deadwood, or what? Some rich dandy comes in and buys an unproven piece of property for 20,000 like it's nothing, but fucking George Hearst can't drop more than 8,000 on something he desperately wants? It seemed as though they were all over the place with prices in the show, where at one point Al is offered 50,000, which I believe is over 1,000,000 in today's currency and regardless of how much he hates Hearst and the Pinkertons, no fucking shady pussy dealer is going to walk away from that kind of money.
Anyway, all that aside, it was a great end to a great series and other than some minor complaints here and there, I loved it.
