Whether you agree with it or not, this is a pretty radical move to address illegal immigration at the southern border. I'm sure it will be walked back at some point but interesting to see how this plays out.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Thursday the United States will impose a 5% tariff on all goods coming from Mexico starting on June 10 until illegal immigration across the southern border is stopped.

Mexico says would be disastrous if Trump imposes new tariffs
“The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied, at which time the Tariffs will be removed,” Trump said on Twitter.

In a statement issued by the White House, Trump said the tariff would increase to 10% on July 1, 15% on Aug. 1, 20% on Sept. 1 and to 25% on Oct. 1.

“Mexico’s passive cooperation in allowing this mass incursion constitutes an emergency and extraordinary threat to the national security and economy of the United States,” Trump said in the statement.

“Mexico has very strong immigration laws and could easily halt the illegal flow of migrants, including by returning them to their home countries,” he said.

I agree mostly. Thing is, it's different when you put deadlines with nearby dates and have the White House issue statements. I think this is a bluff but he might wait a month or two before blinking, or maybe the Mexicans blink first, we'll see.

the real solution to the "crisis" is to petition the UN to allow USA to annex Mexico.

Clearly, the Mexican citizens are voting en masse (with their actions) that they'd rather be in the US.

my thought as well it does make it different but he's not one I'd bet on keeping his word and he won't really be held accountable for it by his base if he doesn't anyway

the bluff and nothing changes then make a new threat tactic isn't working but I doubt he suffers from it politically much so it's not like he has any real disincentive to stop being Trump

He threatened to shut down the border for like 2 months straight and everyone just selectively forgets it or laughs it off

He will turn it into some minor meatless win for his base in one way or another like usual and in reality it won't do shit

If that's the case why does he drag out the trade war with China? I mean if your criticism of him is accurate wouldn't it make sense for Trump to sign a trade deal with China and declare a win and his base would buy it rather than keep going with it even though he's facing a ton of criticism for it on all sides?
