I played all of synthesis league so far and haven't even found an exalt. I probably made 300 chaos total and that is because I am selling unid rares for 2 at a time.
I don't know how to farm.. I do maps, but nothing special that I know of.

I see this new league and people already have 50 exalts and 300+ chaos. How the fuck?

Someone please advise me. I love this game, but I feel like I am developmentally slow in it.

So the main way you make currency in this game is though knowledge. You have to stay up to date and read a lot, and be as competetive as possible. Theres two basic directions you use knowledge gained to make a lot of wealth quickly:

1) Play the game. You can no-life the first couple days and grind your way to very high maps before anyone else. Getting to high tier areas gives you access to items others cant get that sell for a lot, as well as crafting supplies that turn into a lot of wealth when used correctly. The difference between knowing a fair amount about the game and getting to level 80 in 4 days and properly rolling high tier maps as a level 95 by day 3-4 is the difference between earning 1-2ex a day or earning 10-20ex a day.

2) Flipping. This is less a thing in the first couple days (and really at all during a short event), but at about a week in flipping can easily match the amount of currency actual people playing the game earn. In an active league 2-3 weeks in I can average 10-20kfg a day just flipping from my hideout.

No one is actually finding 50 exalts. The people with 50 exalts are either people that did option 1, or are using rmt/jsp at this point in time.

playing, grinding, trading - key is of course farming high content ... i did shaped elder spider forest ~200x and shaped elder ugs before 100x or so alone ...
with high quant rolls on map of course ...

made 100+ exalts this way, also bought HH, not a single trade on jsp,
and i am no great crafter ( although i sold some 10-20 crafted abyss jewels as well for 10c to 50c, but this is just basic crafting )

not very complex, of course you need to invest time ( if you like me are not a great optimizer in time vs cash xD )

yy - i found exactly 4 exalts in 12 person days playtime ( 12 x 24 hours ) during synth myself, so this is *not* the key

Get to high maps asap. They sell for insane currency.

Begining of synth on Saturday(less than 24hours in) had the only mino maps for sale I basically made my own price, selling them for 45c each. Which at the time is around 1ex per.
