The US Constitution specifically states that US debt may never default. Specifically, the 14th Amendment.

We're not allowed to default on our debt.

Single issue voting isnt always realistic.

Trump promised welfare reform so im not completely convinced that he wouldnt try for it given the votes.

this amendment is from a time with a more classic approach, no one back then had an idea what a trillion dollar is or could imagine a deficit so high that debts could never be repaid
