What season did the hbo writers have to start writing on their own? Without the books?

Oh so 6, 7, and 8 were the HBO writers?

Or just 7 and 8?

When you get into the middle of S5, it's not exactly clear what plot points HBO had from GRRM and what they were making up on their own.

Some big moments you can obviously tell they forced in, others I assume will be completely different from the books.

During S5 is when you will start seeing scenes that don't correlate directly to a book event.

The last book ends with Jon Snow being killed (S5 finale), but some parts of S6 had already happened in the books iirc.

That doesn't really hope.... being out of content on one particular plot, doesn't mean they were out on all of them....
