considering even his father had the same head scarring maybe it's actually a birthmark of sorts or ritual the family did related to their ability/link to fire. (and this Kinogami)
would also explain now why his sword is Black, just like the coals to hold fire.

It's kind funny how he spent all this time fighting with Water when his latent potential in geared towards Fire.
