is your usb a 3.0 device? are you using it in a 2.0 slot?
I've had issues with this before.
Does the usb work on other devices? it may be corrupted.
I don't think it's a 3.0 device, as it's an older USB stick. The USB does work on my windows 10 desktop

Then you are doing something wrong...
Make sure you don't have secure boot unabled in the BIOS and legacy ROMs are enabled otherwise you won't be able to boot from a USB drive
Also make sure that your drive is bootable if you don't know how to do that use an application such as Rufus
You're right, I probably am doing something wrong. I actually had Microsoft ensure my USB was formatted appropriately and the files were bootable using Rufus. At this point I'm most likely goigg to shell out the money to have it repaired by a local place I know. It's most likely I fucked something up and it's beyond my repair.
