I grew up in a family that cooks often , but repeatedly cooks the same thing over and over. Mostly Italian-American dishes, leaning more toward the Italian side.
As I got older, I started cooking more for myself and my gf, and enjoy it. Although I mess things up occasionally, 9/10 times my food comes out exactly how I pictured it.
I can usually get a perfect medium-rare steak, nice juicy proteins on the grill, and perfect seafood ( I love seafood ) without fail.
I don't really know how to improve my cooking, though.

I want to cook new dishes, get new flavors, and not feel limited by my imagination (which isn't that large when it comes to cooking, unfortunately).
Is the best way just to look up / try new recipes? Is there a youtube channel anyone recommends for cultivating imagination in the kitchen?
Lead me in the direction you took, jsp :D

Just prepare the food as directed and alter any aspect you feel will enhance the food. After some meals you'll see which cooking methods or ingredients ratios work best. Adding other superfoods to any traditional meal

This is a good idea... or also start going out to restaurants for different fares/cuisine.

Take into account their menu options (usually gives a brief description; as well as, category (Chicken, Pork, Veal, Venison....etc.), also see how the meal is plated, along with noted ingredients due to sight and taste.

Aside from just making food taste great, appearance is high on the favor scale when it comes to elegant dining. Play around with a creme brulee torch, try different methods of cooking the same meals; such as, baking/broiling/frying/grilling/steaming......etc.

All in all, best of luck to you, and we would like to see what you come up with. Pics or it didn't happen.

Honestly that's basic.
More ginger, tumeric, paprika, cumin, lemongrass, chives, clove and cinnamon

Not all together.

Make a curry.. Korean flavored bbq.
Get exotic.
