My sister is looking to get my nephew a laptop to play games on. He mainly plays steam games and Minecraft. Would this laptop be a good choice? $849 w/rebate card. Im guessing thats a Visa card?

Buy him a desktop, unless she doesn't love him.

Saying he plays "Steam games" is like saying he likes to eat "Food" its just too broad a spectrum.

Steam games could be something as simple as super meat boy or as intensive as Crysis.

If you want a machine that can run minecraft, yes, that machine will run minecraft.

It's more money than she needs to spend in my opinion if Minecraft is the sole purpose, and you are paying a premium because it is a laptop. If he is not going to be using it AS a laptop, I.E. (It's going to sit on a desk connected to another monitor with an external keyboard and mouse and never moved) Then I agree with King Arthur, she should buy him a desktop. My experience, laptops for anyone not regularly traveling are unnecessary. You get less for more money and have little to no expand-ability which severely lowers it's usable lifespan.

Give me the following and I'll give you one:

Budget?
Do you need the operating system?
Do you need a monitor? Two?
Keyboard/mouse?
Any other software?

You can save by dialing down the processor or Graphics card, you also may not need an extra 1TB drive for dumping files. This is just a quick 10 minute build, if you want something really in depth I can look tonight.

King Arthur, double check me on this list for compatibility

Here, this is more then enough for the kid tbh...

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tMRFkd

Issue with above is imo overkill. cooler excessive vs the stock cooler, your not ocing nor do single 120 aio do well.
580 vs 1060 is same just one costs a lot more. psu is over kill, ram can have issues at 3k out of teh box as it supports 2933 nativly or w/e it is.
No one buys 2.5 ssd's when m.2 is faster and same cost these days.
