neither one makes sense to me as an answer

Who is the person who left a group and made the others from that group realize he had been an important member?

I guess your plot could fit in a ton of movies.

Spoiler
Well half the crew left when Memphis stopped, car boost went down by almost 50% in the area, etc. I´d say he was important to the scene before quitting.

Spoiler

Oh right.. no this does not fit with your plot, was def appreciated when he was there. Unless one was a car owner of a certain type

An experienced war veteran Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) hired to train and lead the Emperors First army troops.
Although in this case leaving not by his choice (being captured).

It’s probably not exactly what you’re looking for by it was first movie that I thought off that would fit to a small extent.
