What do the big dogs around here recommend in terms of free antivirus software?

Your default one from Windows. Adding an additional layer of complexity when something goes wrong sounds absurd, the default one is fine.

My default one was a 90 day Norton Antivirus license with subscription required for it to continue after 90 days. I uninstalled it and got AVG because I was never going to pay for it. (I just built a new pc yesterday).

I was referring to Windows Firewall/Defender. If you use Windows 10.

Additional layers are super important to secure devices. Mind you its what/how those layers are applied/maintained that matter.
The biggest threat to him though is himself and his ignorance when using the device with or without an AV.

For a free AV I'd use bit defender, Better to have it then not have it imo.

Securing a device with layers
Doesnt mean multiple av on same device
That's not a recommended thing

Except windows defender can easily work along side a 3rd party av (has since like 2014).
I'm in no way advocating for several 3rd party antivirus's as you would like to suggest.
