I'm wanting to build a PC but don't know exactly whats best for what i need. Currently, i'm using an asus laptop with an i7-7700, 1060ti, 8gb 2400 ram. Looking for a large upgrade from that so i don't have to upgrade in the near future.

Budget: Under $2200 CAD
More specific use (what games, what programs): Destiny 2, The division 2(soon), cod, LoL, Rocket League, Overwatch, 3D AutoCAD
Planned time until purchase: Sometime in February
Do you need an Operating System?: Yeah, win 10 home
Do you have any specific preferred components?: preferably an MSI mobo and gpu but not too important
Do you need a sound or wireless card?: yes
Do you want stock cooling or do you plan on overclocking?: definitely overclocking
Do you need a monitor? mouse? keyboard?: just a keyboard. RGB mechanical cherry red
Zip code/location? (Shipping costs): Ont, Canada

I also would like the main components to be RGB but not the case. I want a simple but nice black case with a tempered glass side that's easy to remove.
Don't know if this matters but my monitor is 1440p not 1080p

you could save a solid 100-150 by cutting down on rbg lol

I5 9600k is currently 329 on ebay i think

Look around on redflagdeals, you’ll save a bunch of dolla

here,
Better psu / only ssd (no platter drive) / tri fan gpu vs dual fan / much better case / larger aio rad
mobo / ram / cooler / gpu / case - all are RGB.
case provides a vertical mount for gpu as well.
Lastly its cheaper then above.

/edit
First ever post, wonder who's multi you are.

AMD Alternative. You lose a little bit of top end for gaming performance, but is all around less expensive and has twice as many threads (helps with workstation tasks).
Full 1tb of NVME storage (faster than sata SSD).

CAD works better with single core performance vs multiple cores.
Additionally I believe it also has issues with the extra threads on AMD.
Least this was the case a year ago or so I haven't follow up with it since then.

I did forget the keyboard though.

Depends what you're doing in cad. If you're just plotting road or something it's fine, but if you're doing stress analysis and whatnot, it will definitely use all of the cores. Core limitation in something like that is often a windows scheduler issue. IE blender by default only uses 6 threads on windows for me, but all 12 on mint.

Why did you go to the i5-9600k instead of the i7-8600k
I dont know the difference honestly and what do you think of this build?

8600k is still an i5 (no Hyperthreading). The 9600k will have a better thermal compound between the die and the heat spreader, that's about it but they are the same price so why not.

As for your build, you will want a better cpu cooler than the 212. I would recommend Be Quiet Dark Rock 4 or Cryorig H5 (whichever you can get for less $$ or like the look of more).
Though to be honest, the 8700k will be overkill for you unless you stream or use CAD professionally.
It's also going to be sluggish as fuck without a SSD.

So you're recommending something like this?

i currently just use a 250gb m.2 970 evo to boot windows off of but my main unit is a 2 tb hd. so couldn't i just use the ssd to boot and new hd for storage or is the difference huge?
