yeah, i guessed initially it would likely end up ending at Cal Mira
since the OP and such kind of hinted that (with those characters in the OP's and the dragon hourglass)
it's also a pretty good point to stop for a kind of cliffhanger-ish ending plot wise.

kind of late for an extension.
just have to wait out and see if they decide to make a S2 sometime down the line. (i'd rather them continue to work on more Made in Abyss, but the manga moves slowly so who knows when we'll see more after the sequel movie)
the Manga isn't that far past Cal Mira either so if it was it wouldn't be another 2cour that's for sure.
but even then i don't feel like there's been a decent stopping point yet so far to justify a S2.

I just didnt feel like they would defeat the waves and return home within the next 3 episodes...
would be nice to have a concluded story.

there's 4 more eps not 3 (it's a 25 ep series)
can't have a concluded story when the story itself isn't finished, best you can do is end it at a point that's decent.
so ending it right after the next wave which is a big plot point is a pretty good choice, leave the audience thinking and wanting more. (which is good for setting up interest in a S2, and for novel/manga sales and merch)
