read: most people

most people avoid stigma, and the use of the word as a whole lowers, just look at nigger, you rarely hear people throw that around in real life because there are consequences for it, and even online most people don't say it

I understand what chris is saying but it's not like there's a net negative effect to it, black people were hardly being set up when the word started being discouraged

my experience apparently looks much different than yours because i hear these words on a daily basis
i had an experience yesterday where asking somebody to stop using a word caused them to repeat it several times to spite me
you can argue that it isn't the case for everybody, but you're gonna have a hard time convincing me that this doesn't happen when i see it every day
for the record, i was not implying that black people are setup, or even that black people are the ones asking people to stop saying nigger.
sometimes i am the person asking somebody to stop, and have been bitten in the ass for it several times.
in my opinion, the stronger solution is to tell somebody how it makes you feel, rather than telling them how to behave (not ok in my opinion, even though i do it sometimes)
that might at least teach them some empathy

The words idiot, moron, imbecile, and retard were medical terms from the early 1900s. It didn't take long before people started using those words as insults. Its been happening for a long time.

The 'gay' insult is nothing new either. It's just became more trendy with kids in recent years. I think 'gay' has been laced with negative connotation because homosexuals have been heavily persecuted in England and the US for hundreds of years. Adding to the negativity was the 1980s: Ronald Reagan, the AIDS pandemic, and gay civil rights movement. This stuff stirred up a lot of homophobia which we are still dealing with today.

I dont think recent changes to political correctness has had much effect on the popularity of this stuff.

That is a useful tactic that I picked up from a marriage counselor (not for me). Instead of accusing and blaming the person I just tell them how I feel and i choose my words carefully as to not antagonize them. This way they can focus on my feelings rather than defending themselves against an attack. I've used this method to get irritable or angry people to consider my position and it has been very effective.

I just had a random thought.

The last ten years, we have made stipulations against using words like retard and gay, saying that they are very offensive.

In the aftermath of such implementation, we have created a standard that such words are the ultimate insult. Because of that, words like: "So and so is very autistic, I wish they would just die!" -- "You are so fucking retarded, you're an autistic piece of shit!" -- are commonly found throughout the internet and social media, and sometimes I've even heard such utterances in person.

What say you people?
