Hi,

I'm on Win 10,

my external usb HDD appear with a generic name when I plug it in, but I can't open it, the loading takes forever and ends up bugging my PC, I can't access it either from the disk management (doesnt load when it's plugged).

This problem is the same on 2 different PCs and it's not possible to format it.

I don't have an usb or RW-CD to try it on a bootable linux.

Any tips on what I could do to access it ?

Thanks !

edit : I think I'm gonna buy a usb key to try it tho.

yeah thanks, I've read about it tho.

I just bought an usb key so I'll try it on a ubuntu OS first, and if it doesnt work I'll try to open it.

Ok so, I booted into Ubuntu from a USB drive, from here I have access to the External HD but it is very, very slow (like 10min to access a folder, and doesnt work everytime), I can read files like pictures from it even if it takes a very long time.

I tryed to copy a folder into desktop, ubuntu said it did not have enough space (idk why, it's on a usb drive but it should be possible to write a bit on it, and when I check there is a lot of free space), anyway, I tryed to force the copy, I got 50% of an image and then it crashed with an error message.

I really want to save those pictures from the disk, any idea ?

I also tryed to rip it open but it doesnt have a SATA so I can't plug it.

could be the drive or th econtroller so open it up.
if it persists then your drives shot or corrupted.

I guess I don't have a lot of options left, will probably try to format it and see how it works but It's painful to lose all that content (stepfather stuff..)

Drives are pretty cheap anyways, maybe just order a new one & keep the old one?

You can send them in and have everything on it moved over to a fresh drive. Costs a bit but linus tech tips did a video on it a while back :)
