That's one method to attacking the 'Windows password needs to be reset.' There are plenty of other methods.
Exploitation via safe mode back door user account (even if Windows default Administrator account's not actively enabled: Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 allow you to log on via SYSTEM default account then activate command prompt and enable Administrator account and then create new accounts that can directly delete the other account's password). Thank God for Windows 7 being 1,000x more secure in every way.
The (my opinion) more simple method would be to simply boot up into a live Linux OS and download chntpw utility (program).
It works just fine on Windows X (any and every operating system created by Micro$oft)! Windows 10 is definitely supported.
Here's a link that'll walk you through the entire process:

You’re absolutely correct, but I would use the Linux method as a last resort because resetting a Windows 10 password takes like 60 seconds.
Funny story: I let my sister borrow my windows 7 laptop about five years ago and I popped in one of those Live Ubuntu CDs that you could order off Ubuntu.com for free. I was being considerate and wanted to put her data on a USB before wiping it. To my surprise, It was almost full of girl on girl porn. I mean paid subscriptions and the works. So I just gave it a DoD level wipe and told her she’s never borrowing anything again.
Windows 7 is more secure in some ways and less in other ways. On Windows 7, my password hint can be my password if I want an account in a test environment, Windows 10 rejects it.
Fun fact: Go “Jiggle” a window in Windows with your mouse and watch what it does when you have multiple windows open.
On a side note, this is how to reset a Linux Root Password:
