1. Pictures is far from as accurate as your eye, i could show you this shit which is in the oposite end of the scale. Cameras is set up with filters and shit and you can pretty much make that picture show whatever you need.

2. I have seen it several times on the coast lines here in norway, big tankships where you only see the top parts of boat in clear weather with low waves.
I also work offshore, on rigs in the middle of the Northsea, on clear days we can see platforms from other oil fields, depending on where you are, you can see both Norwegian, english and danish sections. Our platforms is on legs standing between 20 to 50 meter high over sea level normally, meanwhile the platforms you see in the horizon is also standing on legs high above sea level, and you clearly see that parts of the platform leg is hidden behind the horizon, you also see it with islands and boats and platform while flying helicopter out there. Using a pixeled picture like you posted in such a example is useless as they are not accurate enought.
