So I had an old laptop laying around and windows was running horrible on it I decided to install Ubuntu on it awhile back and then it just sat for a year, today I pulled it out and encoded to use it as just a diablo 2 console. It took me awhile as I’m not too used to Ubuntu but I installed wine, got diablo 2 and diablo 2 LOD to install (and work) after awhile. So I can log into single player but when I try to logito battle.net the game crashes and say this program has encountered a critical error and must close. Game is set to run with full permissions I’m not sure what else I can do. Any ideas I can try tomorrow as I just got to work. Thanks folks hopefully I can get this to work.

It's likely trying to run an update. Try installing the latest patch manually via bnet/blizzard.

EDIT: http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/diablo2exp/patches/PC/LODPatch_114d.exe

Run via wine.

Wine seems to be my issue I updated Ubuntu to 18.04 and can not get wine to stay open, seems to be a common issue I just don’t know what I can do about it, tried to re install wine through both command line and from the store but all I get is command not found, it doesn’t even show wine in the store on 18.04

Pretty sure they took it out of the ubuntu repo around 4 months ago?

Sudo wget (find a release key! :) )

sudo apt-key (maybe add a key?)

sudo apt-add-repository (where are you pulling from again?)

Check the wine wiki those are the commands you will need to add the repo then just install as usual. :) not going to post the full commands but that should point you in the correct direction!

I find it better to run Diablo 2 inside a Window 7 VirtualBox, less issues than running Wine. This is how I run my Diablo 2 on Ubuntu 16.04.

But if your laptop is very old, it won't like VirtualBox.

Currently, Diablo 2 has "garbage" rating in Wine, because when connecting to BattleNet, you download a .dll used for (not sure, hacking detection? system stats?) and it is loaded in an unconventional way, which Wine doesn't know how to work with.

It is a shame Blizzard did that, D2 had Platinum rating for years before this...

I just removed reading rights from the dll you are talking about
that fixed it for me

but might be a ban reason. i've used it for some time and it seems safe.
