Every time there's a Euro Cup or World Cup, whoever has a nice journey in it usually gets a high spot in these awards.
We all know Modric is a great player but in no way shape or form was he the reason Real won Champions League.
The only reason he gets it is because he won the CL and finished 2nd in WC.
Why do you think Griezzman was 3rd in voting? He played for France and they won.
Dude scored three times in World Cup, not in the final. His team didn't do shit in the league. (by nothing, I mean they finished 2nd but was like 20 points behind Barcelona).
He scored 29 games in total (league + EL, cause they didn't even make it out of groups in CL, sure they won EL but cmon rofl, we're talking 3rd in the world.)

Messi and Salah but finished behind Griezmann, despite both being 500 times better and having WAY better seasons.

while i think that you can certainly make a fair point about modric not being the absolute best football player in the last 12 months, i think the reaction his win triggered is ridiculous. he's most definitely up there (crucial part of his team winning the champions league and also leading his national team to a WC final), and while most ballon d'or winners have been strikers and offensive mids, there are notable exceptions (like yashin, beckenbauer, matthäus, cannavaro) that also didn't have impressive goal scoring stats (something people seem to be completely obsessed with) to back up their claims, but no one would question their wins just because of that...

that being said, individual awards like this are a joke anyway and i think it's hilarious that people actually get upset about this.

Not at all. His job to just run alot, not to create chances or actually get assists. Are you saying he's a defensive midfielder? Are we looking at the Makelele of todays' Real Madrid?
If he is this good, why is he not getting voted player of the match? Why is he not making that goal scoring assist? I agree he's a good player but him winning this award is nothing but absurd.
