is the 7700k still a good chip? i mostly only play 1080p,if i could get a used 7700k/mobo/16gb ram for half the current price, would i still be better off buying a 9600k/mobo/ram new? basically is the increase in performance that much more that it justifies spending a whole lot more

a 7700k would do you just fine for gaming.
don't cheap out on the mobo though.

Get 7700k. Its same architecture and with a half decent mobo and cooler you can achieve better performance if you overclock it.
