my sound system seemingly took a random shit last night.
this is a 2.1 system. it is rather dated as i've been using this system for 20-25 years.
windows 10 pro 64-bit. not sure if you would need any more info

what i tried.
unplugged and replugged everything in
made sure the correct audio profile was default
uninstalled and reinstalled audio driver
windows restored to a few days ago

none of these have worked.

even with volume @ max. there is 0 static from sub or tweeters.
one thing to note, is that the audio jack does work, i am temporarily using that jack for my monitor speakers.
the volume knob does light up and get power. this draws it's power from the sub, so i know things are getting power.

any suggestions before i buy a new system?

Do you have another computer you could try the speakers on?

/e Or other speakers that you could try on your comp?

I mean it sounds like your speakers just died, but ya never know. Well, the amp in your speakers, that is.

I dunno the make/model of your speakers, but when they ALL go out...it's usually the sound chip on the motherboard or the amplifier that's in the speakers.
There's not much else that can strop ALL the speakers at the same time.

/e Since you can still get audio on your monitor, it's probably the amplifier in the speakers. If the motherboard sound chip went out...you wouldn't get any audio, anywhere.
(I'm assuming you don't have a sound CARD)

i am now noticing another issue, but it's related to sound so i'm throwing it in here.

i plugged my monitor speakers in for temp usage, but am getting a buzz during graphical tasks. volume can be at 0% through system.
i am noticing this on some games with more going on, and through bench apps like kombuster and superposition.
with the benching programs, i only get the buzz when i have my gpu OC'd. some games i am noticing it even when card is set to stock settings.

i've read a bit about it and it appears to be lack of emi shielding for these sound cables. i could delve more into that, but that's not my goal here.

with what i have read... this doesn't seem to be a huge issue and i could likely fix this with a better designed cable.
since my speakers did go out though... i can't help but wonder if perhaps there is something damaging happening.

anyone have thoughts about this?
