My friend and I are brainstorming a potential business, to sum it up the best we can, we are wanting to open up a sort of gaming / hangout / bar scene, so we were trying to figure out how a small business like this could be successful, and stand out from other venues.

I'd like to hear some other opinions, if you have any unique or interesting ideas, send me a PM and I will gladly tip if the idea is even remotely useful.

Were a university town so the ones near us pop up while the students are here with graffiti stylegaming artwork covering the walls super smash brothers battle scenes etcthen close during quieter periods they do quite well. The more you put into aesthetics the more gamers will want to hang out. Also hold console and card tournaments regularly charge admission and share peoples passion for it so the ones with no friends want to hang out with you and theyll pay for your friendship ty

for real don't allow card players into the venue. they smell awful and they will be there for hours not buying any alcohol. no cards. ever.

barcades need: air hockey, pool, fighting games, lan lounges, well season hot chips and tendies and that's fuckin it dude. but if you see anyone with a card in their hand you have to ban them for life please

i'm not sure i got my point across with the last post. if you "encourage" card gamurs in to your store they're going to weird up the joint. the smell is the first thing to hit the new patrons who are just looking for a fun place to hang out and play some games. "it smells weird and that guy hasn't groomed himself in months" she says, pointing to the table of people who have been playing magic the gathering in your store without purchasing anything for the last 3 hours. "how great it would be to have one of these places without these fucking smelly weirdos stinking up the joint", everyone else said in unison

I don't have any industry-specific things to recommend, but location is key. Do a lot of primary market research into the area you want to open it in to confirm that there's adequate demand. Scope out nearby competitors, go for a drink there and see what they're doing right and wrong.

You could theoretically differentiate your bar on a cost basis, but as a small start up it's unlikely you'd be able to compete on price with bigger bars and chains, which would benefit from economies of scale. So a good and cost effective way to differentiate yourselves is through excellent customer service. Build a rapport with patrons.
