A lion can reproduce with other lions, and if the offspring are lions, both parents were lions, and the same species. that's the key, offspring are the same species. when a lion and tiger reproduce together their offspring are a new and different species, not lions, not tigers, tions and ligers. the children of sapiens and neanderthals, if they existed, weren't the same species.
it's neither inconsistent not a contradiction, you're just misunderstanding two groups as being mutually exclusive that aren't always mutually exclusive. humans can't mate with sheep, but if you want to do an experiment for us to prove it because you don't trust science go ahead.
