I'm well aware of proton, I use it for PoE. It still sucks compared to Windows.

that isnt the fault of linux on 90% of the gaming end its windows programming flaws that cause issues on linux systems.

And anyone who has done the research knows linux is superior. an example:

my windows 10 machine with 16gigs of ram AFTER debloating useless junk uses 4.26gb of ram at idle, fresh install with nothing running but the task manager.

the same machine on linux idles at around 450mb of ram. and thats with gnome desktop, discord, and task manager installed and running.

on linux unless I have to emulate i get better frame rates in most cases. hence why I want diablo 2 running on wine as opposed to a vm. Its not that im unable to use windows. its that windows leaves a bad taste in the mouth after youve gotten used to something better.

I'm not arguing that Windows is a better operating system, I agree that Linux is better and I use Mint for pretty much everything not gaming.
The plug and play gaming experience on Windows is still overall better tho. I would LIKE to see proton get far enough in development that I don't just keep a Windows partition for my games, and that newer games will release native Vulkan or DXVK support, but it just isn't there YET.

Were getting close though. I agree.

The issue with plug and play games is due to microsofts closed source stuff. basically if they were open source like linux it wouldnt be an issue. But the linux version of the i386 and i586 architectures that can be added are incomplete. Aswell as a lot of developers who simply dont care.

If Linux compatibility goes up at the same rate it is currently for gaming, I'd say by 2021 Linux will be a mainstream gaming platform. I hope Valve and Activision can work out a deal too so that Blizzard games can also take advantage of Proton (or an evolution of it).
