Hes hunting whitetail, not grizzly bear. Whats next? you gonna tell us 338 win mag is > 300 win mag? Hunting moose now. But 375 H&H > 338 win mag - we are hunting elephants now- oh i mean whitetail.
There is always a bigger faster bullet. Doesn't mean its better.
i hunt whitetail deer every year with my 300 win mag. what now champ?
you ever tracked a deer through a few miles of marsh and swamp only to find a long trail of dwindling blood piles and no deer? I have.
a 270 is a quality deer rifle, for sure, but the 300 win mag is superior in almost every way. it's well within whitetail caliber range. 270 is only superior on a LONG flat shot, something I rarely encounter in my area. I have a 270 just like the next guy, I just don't use it for anything but a loaner or range shots for practice (the ammo's far cheaper than 300win mag).
both are far inferior to a simple 12 ga slug however, if you're shot is short and open. anything below a 270 is simply bad sportsmanship, hunters who use 223 or 243 or some such baby calibers to "save meat" are just people with pussy shoulders or inflated egos about being snipers. Put the deer down in 1 shot, let it die quick, or get on it and kill it fast. ive seen deer with 5-10 223 shots in them, no meat saved. I've also seen deer with a pierced lung from a 270 run a mile. I've never lost a deer since i moved up, nor obviously with a slug.
