Hes hunting whitetail, not grizzly bear. Whats next? you gonna tell us 338 win mag is > 300 win mag? Hunting moose now. But 375 H&H > 338 win mag - we are hunting elephants now- oh i mean whitetail.

There is always a bigger faster bullet. Doesn't mean its better.

i hunt whitetail deer every year with my 300 win mag. what now champ?

you ever tracked a deer through a few miles of marsh and swamp only to find a long trail of dwindling blood piles and no deer? I have.

a 270 is a quality deer rifle, for sure, but the 300 win mag is superior in almost every way. it's well within whitetail caliber range. 270 is only superior on a LONG flat shot, something I rarely encounter in my area. I have a 270 just like the next guy, I just don't use it for anything but a loaner or range shots for practice (the ammo's far cheaper than 300win mag).

both are far inferior to a simple 12 ga slug however, if you're shot is short and open. anything below a 270 is simply bad sportsmanship, hunters who use 223 or 243 or some such baby calibers to "save meat" are just people with pussy shoulders or inflated egos about being snipers. Put the deer down in 1 shot, let it die quick, or get on it and kill it fast. ive seen deer with 5-10 223 shots in them, no meat saved. I've also seen deer with a pierced lung from a 270 run a mile. I've never lost a deer since i moved up, nor obviously with a slug.

Shot placement is key. Don't blame bad shots and bad hunters on a round that is more than capable of dropping a whitetail in its tracks. I guess a bigger bullet makes you a better hunter when you cant hit your target properly.

We better call in the A-10 because my aim sucks. Screw those baby calibers! I'm using 30mm like a true sportswoman.

a 22 is capable of dropping a white tail. its of course about placement. but i can "place" my 300 winmag twice as far from the heart as a 243 and the deer's heart gets hit all the same, causing a near instant death. if you're a sportsmen your only goal should be to kill the deer as quickly and as painlessly as you can. seeing many deer up and run from 243 shots, or 30-30 shots, i dont consider them sporting. unless you're in a swamp with shooting lanes of 50 yards or something. it's simply not possible to be perfectly accurate from 200 yards with a small caliber rifle in the rain and win (real conditions), much less all bundled up if its winter.

i'd personally be fine if they outlawed all rifles for white tail (or in my case re-outlawed) and people could only use slugs. even if u miss by a foot the deer still drops instantly.

I'm just giving you a hard time for being snide about the .300. There is nothing wrong with any of the popular hunting cartridges when they are used within their effective range. Bad shots are almost always from people taking a shot that is too far away. This is the fault of the "hunter", not the firearm.

indeed arguments about the best caliber for deer often ignores that they all work, and situationally each have a purpose. im from a VERY flat place in the state, where i live now, and u hear a lot about idiots trying to shoot a deer at 200-300 yards with a 243. maimed deer always make me a bit sick to see, poor things.

people bitch about crossbows too, even though they're far more effective at killing deer. every compound bow hunter i know has put an arrow through a deer they never were able to track down at some point. if u want to make impressive shots, imo, join a league and maim targets. i have a lot of stupid family, friends, and coworkers that are poor sportsmen and borderline cruel to prey, so i get sticky on those more than i should.
