Looking to get into the game, played D2 for yearsssss. Have no idea what to build towards, or anything else. Im looking for a decent guide to help me out.

Best bet is to go to the path of exile forums and find a build guide that sounds fun then work towards it.
Your first character will not be good.

Plague, Thanks bud, i have a few friends that stopped playing D2, and switched to POE. I myself was behind, and im just starting POE. I appreciate the advice.

get gems, more gems, put them in gear, you may link them, make gems work together, if it provides disco, continue

I wouldn’t start following a build immediately

I would create a character and progress naturally. Choose what you think looks fun. Afterwards when you get stuck, try and find a guide closest to what you made and see where you went wrong.

After you have more of an understanding start looking at builds

arc totems or traps for a trapsin-like experience - and extremely cheap and end game viable character
molten strike for a melee, or cyclone for a WW type feel

start with a build, but make sure you actually look at the passive points you put in and consider why you are taking those points.

the storyline in this game is trash and essentially non-existent so playing through the game for your first time really isn't important like it was in d2.
what you can learn on the playthru is how the various monster mechanics work, as they are the same in late game but often will be able to one-shot you. the game is heavily based on one-shot mechanics unlike d2.

Yeah... why experiment / play with the passive tree when you can blindly follow what someone else did first time through.

Personally... I had fun learning and experimenting my first char, and was still able to make it to endgame. Later on was able to optimize my char by viewing guides and seeing what could’ve been done better.

Ofc it depends on what you immediately want to get out of Poe though

I wouldn’t want to start with an OP build that can kill Uber Elder first time around then when you decide to play anything else get stuck on yellow maps. I’d Experiment now while everything’s new . You can grind away on OP builds later once you’ve enjoyed the game

go to playlist and watch the starter videos about mechanics. this is handsdown the best introduction for someone who wants to get into this game seriously
