Using the computer while defragging.
Is this inadvisable?

If you're gonna use the PC while defragging, the process itself is gonna take more time.
Surfing the net won't affect it much though

Personally, I wouldn't advise it. In my own experience, I have had issues with the de-fragging process hanging and having to restart when i'm doing things at the same time.

I usually just start the process right before I head to bed and turn off pretty much every background program except the absolute essentials. Haven't had an issue yet

Since windows 10 a defrag is not needed and not advised with an ssd at all.
It won't have any negative effects doing stuff whiles it's running.
How ever if a file is to be moved and its in use it can reset the process as stated. Although it should be noted that is just really hangs and not actually restarts as it will pick up from where it left off its only the timer the resets.

Really? Why?

I know that you're not supposed to defrag SSD's.

its done be default by the system when its idle.
