Saw in another thread that it's illegal to purchase it.

Is it possible to upgrade with in game gold?

It's my understanding that you have to buy the expansion with money. You can then upgrade the expansion package for gems

Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of the North are fairly cheap. Can't use gold for it.
