Hey guys, I am googling this as we speak, just wondering what some of the knowledgeable guys here have to say

note: I have used a can of compressed air, though I'm not sure how effective it was, as I wasn't able to get directly to the fan..

Would clearing stuff off my laptop help? Or deleting programs I don't really use?
atm my laptop only has 30gb of memory left, I doubt this would really affect it but who knows, it might affect performance or something related.

Yeah, keep it clean. Both of dust and useless programs etc.

Keep it cool. Laptops are notorious for overheating which will fry your innards rather quickly when gaming. Some sort of cooling system would be essential if you're pushing it hard.

What laptop do you have?

I can recommend Ccleaner and Throttlestop(to undervolt)
I always change the thermal paste on all my machines., to a higher quality one. (This can void warranty on some machines)

Thermal paste is a bit more involved and you would have to take apart the whole laptop. It would also give you access to clear even more dust out.

A good suggestion is to remove any unused programs that run in the background. Anything you can remove will reduce the load on the laptop in multiple areas and extend the life of the laptop. It wont be in a measurable way, but laptops generally outlive their life when the first component fails.

There's your problem. HP Envy's are notorious for malfunctioning. Should have got a better laptop. Not even 3 months of owning mine, the hinges went, then the processor, to the point I didn't want to deal with it anymore. Sure they seem nice but you can get bigger bang for your buck.

I have heard bad things about Hp and their tendencies to overheat. This has happened plenty of times to mine. Unfortunately I didn't know about this stuff before I bought it. But it had all the features I needed and it's lasted this long so I guess it's not too bad

How experienced should I be to get in and start applying that?

Or should I pay a tech support person to help

If you haven't worked with components directly, I wouldn't start here. If you've built a desktop in your life tho, it's the same as the CPU for that, just a different form factor.
