In a meta-analysis of 27 mostly China-based studies on fluoride and neurotoxicity, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health and China Medical University in Shenyang found strong indications that fluoride may adversely affect cognitive development in children [50]. All but one study suggested that high fluoride content in water may negatively affect cognitive development. The average loss in intelligence quotient (IQ) was reported as a standardized weighted mean difference of 0.45, which would be approximately equivalent to seven IQ points for commonly used IQ scores with a standard deviation of 15 [50]. While fluoride's effect on IQ in this meta-analysis did not reach statistical significance, the combined effect at population level is remarkable.

Australian surveys indicate that the general Australian population is mildly deficient in iodine [53] Iodine-deficient children ingesting fluoridated water have been found to demonstrate intellectual deficits even at water fluoride levels of 0.9 ppm [54].

However, population-based-studies strongly suggest that chronic fluoride ingestion is a possible cause of uterine cancer and bladder cancer; there may be a link with osteosarcoma—highlighted as an area where there is evidence of problems requiring further research [30, 72–74].

New Delhi neighbourhood with average water fluoride level of 4.37 ppm have evidence of clinical hypothyroidism attributable to fluoride. They found borderline low FT3 levels among all children exposed to fluoridated water [51]

A 2018 study published in Occupational & Environmental Medicine found that, for every increase of 1 milligram per liter of fluoride in a pregnant women’s urine, their offspring averaged 2.4 points lower IQ scores at age 1-3 years-old. This follows a 2017 studyfunded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) showing in utero fluoride levels associated with lower IQ in 6-12 year-olds.

first the government tries to turn the frogs gay, then they shrink our penises with plastics, and now it turns out they actually are making us retarded with fluoride

absolutely brutal, they must really hate us all

Could be, but I won't put any stock into it until there's studies elsewhere.

China is notoriously shitty at publishing good science.

Mexico isn't a high bar either.

Regardless, large population studies like this are pretty easy to get deceptive confident values out of. It's the same reason why we get new fad diets every few years. Nutrition science is hard, and most of the results are garbage even if the methodology checks out.

Best to wait ~10 years before drawing conclusions.

Report presented in 2013 to french lawmakers.

-------------------

The Harvard study.
Currently, 36 studies have linked low IQ with fluoride in water,
some cases at relatively modest levels: Lin et al, 1991 (0.88 ppm); Ding et al, 2011
(0.3 to 3 ppm). and Xiang et al., 2003 (estimated threshold of 1.9 ppm).
A team from Harvard (Choi et al., 2012) carried out a meta analysis covering 27 of these
studies. Although they found methodological weaknesses in several of these studies,
results are remarkably consistent with IQ reduction in 26 of 27 studies
examined. The average drop is about 7 cents IQ.

Fluoridation is a bad idea that should never have been initiated.
It's a bad idea to use drinking water to distribute a drug because

a. you can not control the dose;
b. you can not control who receives the drug - he goes to everyone and
c. it violates the basic right of the individual to informed consent with respect to any
administered drug.

The essential premises on which is based on fluoridation have been refuted.

1. Fluoride is not a nutrient.
2. Fluoridated water is not a benefit for babies, it only presents
risks.
3. Even the promoters. They now recognize that the main benefit comes from
topical application, not ingestion (CDC, 1999).

I'd take those odds

drinking fluoridated water is a terribly inefficient way of applying it to your teeth anyway

They have studied dietary versus topical application and found topical doesn't get all of the benefits.
