So I'm reading a book on the Keto diet right now and plan to give it a shot for a month or two when I'm finished. My goal is to lose about 10-15 pounds with as much fat as possible and as little muscle as possible.

My concern is that I don't want to lose a lot of muscle mass for varying reasons. From different things I've read it seems possible to actually build muscle while on the diet but it seems more likely that you'll lose muscle mass.

Luckily for me the diet I've been on for the past 9-10 months is pretty similar to a more strict keto diet than the one I'm gonna try (I want to say like, 20 grams of carbs per day? Maybe 30) so it's not as big of a transition as someone who eats fast food and whatnot.

As long as you’re hitting your protein to sustain as much muscle the power of a caloric deficit outweighs the importance of what macros make that up, unless you plan on going onto a stage in the very near future keto isn’t necessary to lose weight, for the average person wanting to diet there’s almost no research showing keto to make any more significant fat loss than those who chose to eat carbs during a deficit.

yeah thats true but sometimes people need a program to stick to in order to accomplish something. kind of like how some alcoholics/drug addicts become christian or something. lol that analogy mightve been a bit of a stretch but yeah.

I guess the breakdown is like 70-75% fat, 10-15% protein and the rest in carbs on the keto diet which is likely less than I consume now. I don't count calories or anything else for what I eat currently but I also believe I read you should eat like 1.5-2 grams of protein per pound of body weight to be actually building muscle, so I imagine I'm in excess of that presently.

From what I read the keto diet allows your body's metabolism to function differently by eliminating carbohydrates significantly and thereby burn fat as the primary source of energy; is this wrong?

That’s the run around of Ketosis.. But a few factors to think about:

1. Your performance will be doodoo
2. Demonizing a food group almost always equals failure in a diet
3. You won’t lose any more weight than any other diet.. Calories in vs calories out is the golden rule.
4. Most people run the diet in conjunction with the bro science of IIFYM, which can alarmingly raise your LDL and triglyceride levels

The keto diet has its place, such as for someone who would benefit to have ketones in their blood like an epileptic patient, but it’s an overrated fad diet.
