Dolphins are mammals.
Whales are mammals.

The two species are close enough genetically to breed.
Offspring are likely sterile, like in other cross bred mammals.

Whales are not dolphins, unless you count the killer whale, which is a real whale.

Personally I don't see the big deal with hybrids of any type as evolution has forced an increasing set of diversity

Agreed except genetics nukes the reproductive genes most of the time for cross bred species, esp mammals.

Most cross bred animals are not capable of reproduction, thus are excluded from the evolutionary genepool.

I typod my old post, I meant to say killer whales are not true whales.

They are toothed whales, which is a sun species of normal whales.
