Gave it new thermal paste/pads

Computer boots with card, when booted in safe mode or the basic VGA driver the computer works fine No artifacts/lines I even was able to play D2 with it.

As soon as I try to install a driver it freezes the whole damn computer. Tried Current AMD driver, 16.11 and 15.11. 15.11 is the only one that wont insta crash, it loads the driver but suddenly I can't get into windows I only get "Thread stuck in driver" error bluescreen and have to go back into safe mode and uninstall the driver. I've also disabled Windows checking and drivers automatically.

Already flashed the bios to the correct one with ATI winflash, I've used DDU to uninstall every trace of any driver before trying any of the above ones.

The only other thing I can think of is try windows 7/8.1 and use a driver for that os, or try it in a hackintosh with an apple driver. Please one of you save me from the fate or formatting a spare SSD

TL:DR card displays but only with Basic VGA adapter, cant install drivers or boot into windows with drivers installed.

Good question,

I have been using AMD's installer. For what it's worth I've unchecked the Audio driver and the AMD settings thing to try and just get the Video driver.

/E I've also tried using device manager to manaully download a driver from the AMD crimson folder, still locks up.

If there is another way i'm all for trying it

The latter method is what I was referring to.
I wonder if the cards just bad or its a conflict with other hardware.

can you test it in another pc?

I do have another 2700K build that I could try out on tonight.

I am worried it's a bad card, the worst part is that it gives me hope by displaying with VGA drivers so clearly it isn't 100% fried.

Displaying via vga though isn't exactly taxing on a card either though.
So really you could still be up shit creek if it had to render something more then a desktop.

Also what is the exact model/brand of the gpu? I know its a 7970 but made by whom and what revision etc.

True. I guess D2 isnt super taxing either. Most games wont open without a driver but I could mabe try a render test to see if it explodes.

Its a diamond 7970. That exact model in the newegg link

I was thinking about this haha.

I couldn't find any janky pirate drivers to try, then again I don't really know where to find that stuff.

I found the old versions on Guru 3D

I'm gonna try new comp and windows 8.1/7 respectivly with really old drivers tonight

d2 basically renders via cpu, so its similar to just running desktop.
