If the server crashes, your gear can be out of sync with your character. This happens even on the current server. Just that, it basically never crashes, so it's not a problem. For beta testing, it's a little more problematic. :) It's one of the major overhauls I want to do and have wanted to do for a very long time, to address this particular nuance in the way it's currently designed. It was out of the scope of this initial port and rewrite, however, but hoping to get to it soon.

@paul: are you also trying to test the drop rates, or would it be viable to increase the drop rate by like x100-x1000 for the time of beta testing?
I know blizzard did that on their PTR with unique and set items, which was a nice thing to set up stuff quickly
