I think by year 3 or 4, he'll get it. Right now he's going to spend the next 1 or 2 years growing alongside DSJ. Rick Carlisle will have to decide what position is best for him, SG/SF. He's not the greatest defender, so he'll have to build a system that can hide DSJ/Doncic on that side of the ball.
