Almost exceeding the deepest mine today by 2km...

It's 3.5 miles down. No rock, no dirt, nothing but water.

Yes it will be difficult, but hardly impossible. Hell, Elon Musk could probably do it while sitting on the crapper.

LOL. I would have said that myself, except the location is so far east of Japan, that even grasping China would have trouble declaring that...their territory.

Not saying they won't try though. :D

Chinese fishing boats are easy to spot, chinese excavator subs aren't likely to be as easy. More problematic will be if this rare element is only the tip of the iceberg for what's under the sea in that area. Fish has caused a sort of cold war in the region, imagine something worth a million times more per pound. If there's even somewhat credible reports that it's elsewhere in the area i expect china to probe them to find any they can get their hands on.

good to hear that at least some important resources are in the hands of decent people and they are one of the few countries who are capable of doing this

Paris syndrome (French: Syndrome de Paris, Japanese: パリ症候群, Pari shōkōgun) is a transient mental disorder exhibited by some individuals when visiting or going on vacation to Paris, as a result of extreme shock derived from their discovery that Paris is not what they had expected it to be. The syndrome is characterized by a number of psychiatric symptoms such as acute delusional states, hallucinations, feelings of persecution (perceptions of being a victim of prejudice, aggression, or hostility from others), derealization, depersonalization, anxiety, and also psychosomatic manifestations such as dizziness, tachycardia, sweating, and others, such as vomiting.[1] Similar syndromes include Jerusalem syndrome and Stendhal syndrome. The condition is commonly viewed as a severe form of culture shock. It is particularly noted among Japanese travelers.
