I don't believe one should sacrifice any freedom in favor of state-maintained roads. Toll roads and community-use roads (pay monthly/one-time fee for continued use) fills the gaps.

You are insane.

Benjamin wanted to tax the Penn family to fund the army. Liberty here is the freedom given to citizens by an army able to defend the country.

1. Raise state retirement age
2. Reduce extortionate public sector pensions that pay out 5x a private sector pension on average
3. Encourage young skilled immigration

This is the perfect example of how democracy is a bad government system. All 3 points you brought up are perfectly valid and would solve many problems, but they'd also enrage a large number of people.

It would take a pretty selfless politician to push these regulations through. He probably wouldn't get re-elected.

What about maybe paying an amount each year based on what you earn? While you're at it you could bundle in your payments for the military, emergency services and general maintenance of other public services run by the state. Sort of like a subscription to state services?

Owait... That's taxes.

That's an extremely false equivalence. The moral concept here is that everything is voluntary, not coerced. Production isn't seized or stolen. Only those who pay have access to the roads, and payment is completely voluntary.

What does it a profit a man to give up his humanity, his freedom, in order that his living standards might be marginally augmented?

Our deficit started well before 2010.

Its got a huge surplus built up to help ride this out, at least it did until republicans started dipping into it to fund illegal wars.

This isn't a 'system'; it's the lack of a system. Roads cost money, whether you pay or not. With the current system, people often drive on roads to do things that they really shouldn't be doing.

Having the most frequent users of roads pay is the fairest way to fund their maintenance. Doing so would encourage car pooling, efficient trip planning, and significantly decrease traffic.

As if people know what they want.
